Created on:2026-10-20

Preface

To address frequent power outages for households in Eritrea, this project deploys a 3.6kW hybrid grid PV energy storage system. The system provides emergency power for residential loads, reduces utility power consumption by harnessing natural sunlight, and the equipment is adapted to local high-temperature and sandy working conditions. The project design and core advantages are introduced below.

Located in the northeastern corner of Africa, Eritrea features unique geography with abundant solar irradiation that unlocks great potential for photovoltaic power generation. Nevertheless, weak power grid infrastructure, unstable voltage and recurring blackouts are major headaches for local households. Sudden power cuts shut down home appliances directly and bring much inconvenience to daily life.

Tailored to the power consumption status of local Eritrean households, we have developed a custom residential hybrid PV energy storage power supply system. Composed of a single-phase hybrid grid energy storage inverter, gel energy storage batteries and high-efficiency monocrystalline silicon PV modules, it forms an integrated power solution featuring self-consumption of solar power, backup power via energy storage and complementary utility power.

I. Detailed Core Configuration of the Whole System

System Configuration Diagram

This project adopts a 6.5kW 48V single-phase hybrid grid inverter as the core control unit of the entire system, paired with 4 pieces of 12V 100Ah sealed gel batteries and 6 pieces of 600W monocrystalline silicon PV modules to build a complete hybrid PV-storage power supply system. The whole system follows a well-defined design logic where all components work collaboratively to realize multi-mode operation including PV power generation, electric energy storage and load power supply.

1. 6.5kW 48V Single-phase Hybrid Grid Inverter

6.5 kW, 48 V, Single-Phase Grid-Tied Inverter

The hybrid grid inverter acts as the "brain" of the whole system. This 6.5kW single-phase hybrid inverter supports both grid-tied and off-grid dual-mode operation with pure sine wave output and a power factor of 1.0, which can perfectly drive most household electrical appliances such as air conditioners, lighting and televisions.

The device has a built-in MPPT solar controller with a PV input voltage range of 60V~500VDC, compatible with high-power PV modules. It can run without batteries and comes with an automatic lithium battery activation function, while also supporting gel battery energy storage scenarios. A built-in WiFi remote monitoring module is compatible with Android and iOS mobile systems, enabling users to check PV generation, battery state of charge and load power consumption anytime and anywhere to remotely monitor system operation.

It is equipped with comprehensive multi-protection functions against overload, over-temperature and short circuit. Capable of stable operation within an ambient temperature range of -10℃~50℃, the unit can withstand the hot climate in Eritrea. Its maximum conversion efficiency reaches 97% to cut power loss and make full use of solar resources.

2. 4 Pieces of 12V 100Ah Sealed Gel Batteries

12V 100Ah Sealed Gel Battery

The energy storage unit uses 4 pieces of 12V 100Ah sealed gel batteries. To match the 48V DC voltage of the inverter, the 4 gel batteries are connected in series to form a 48V energy storage battery pack.

Gel batteries serve as an ideal energy storage solution for African residential households. The battery adopts corrosion-resistant alloy plates, high-purity electrolyte with special additives and features low water loss. The fully sealed construction prevents liquid leakage and acid creeping for high safety. The safety valve structure mitigates risks of battery bulging and bursting. The rugged battery shell delivers excellent impact resistance and shock resistance.

The product boasts long service life, low internal resistance, low self-discharge rate, high sealing reaction efficiency, good consistency and minimal maintenance workload.

Excess power generated by PV in daytime with sufficient sunlight is stored in the gel battery pack. When sunlight fades in the evening, light is insufficient on cloudy days, or utility power cuts off abruptly, the battery pack immediately discharges to guarantee uninterrupted power supply for loads.

3. 6 Pieces of 600W High-efficiency Monocrystalline Silicon PV Modules

The PV array consists of 6 pieces of 600W monocrystalline silicon modules. We standardize the series connection quantity of modules to match the MPPT voltage operating window of the inverter. Under STC, this 600W monocrystalline silicon module has an open-circuit voltage of 48.59V. We adopt a configuration of 6 modules connected in series: the total open-circuit voltage of the string reaches approximately 291.54V, and this single string connects to the inverter.

Selection Verification: When 6 modules are connected in series, the total open-circuit voltage is around 291.54V, falling within the inverter MPPT operating voltage range of 60V~500VDC and meeting equipment requirements. All modules in this single string have consistent parameters to avoid generation imbalance caused by mismatched components.

The modules feature silver anodized aluminum alloy frames and 2.0mm tempered glass with high mechanical strength. The front side can withstand a load of 5400Pa to resist sandstorms, adapting to the outdoor sandy environment in Eritrea. The modules have excellent temperature coefficients with low power degradation under high temperature, maintaining favorable power output under strong sunlight and high heat in Africa. The rear side delivers power gain and superior low-light performance to capture solar energy in early morning and dusk.

Total installed capacity of the PV array: 6 × 600W = 3600W (3.6kW).

The implementation of this residential PV-storage project includes six standardized phases: pre-site survey, solution confirmation, equipment delivery, on-site installation, wiring & commissioning, acceptance and handover, ensuring smooth project delivery.

III. Estimated Daily Power Generation of This Eritrea Project

Eritrea enjoys abundant solar resources with an average annual peak sun hour of approximately 5.0~5.5h. We take the median value of 5.2h as the calculation benchmark. The installed PV capacity of this project is 3.6kW. Theoretical daily generation = Installed capacity × Peak sun hours 3.6kW × 5.2h =18.72kWh

Taking account of dust coverage on modules, line losses, power attenuation caused by temperature and inverter conversion losses on site, the comprehensive system efficiency is set at 0.8. Actual average daily generation ≈18.72kWh ×0.8≈14.98kWh, around 15kWh per day.

Power output varies with seasons: in dry seasons with ample sunlight and sunny days, daily generation can reach 16~18kWh; in rainy seasons with more cloudy weather and reduced irradiation, daily generation drops to 10~13kWh.

Electricity generated by PV in daytime is preferentially supplied to household loads. Surplus power is stored in the 48V gel battery pack. Total capacity of the battery pack: 48V×100Ah=4.8kWh, storing about 4.8kWh of electricity. When sunlight is unavailable or utility power fails, the battery discharges to guarantee power supply for critical loads.

IV. System Operating Modes Adapted to Eritrean Household Power Consumption

This hybrid grid PV-storage system can flexibly switch between multiple operating modes to cope with unstable local power grids:

  • PV Priority Mode (Sunny Daytime) When sunlight is sufficient, power generated by PV modules supplies household loads first. Surplus power automatically charges the gel battery pack; once the battery is fully charged, excess power is handled per system settings, and utility power remains as backup without power supply.
  • PV + Battery Combined Power Supply (Cloudy Days / Dusk) As solar irradiation weakens and PV output fails to support load demand, the battery automatically discharges to supplement power and jointly secure household electricity.
  • Utility Power Supplement Mode (Prolonged Overcast, Low Battery State of Charge) When the battery charge drops to the preset lower limit and PV output is insufficient, the system automatically connects to utility power to supply loads, and can charge the battery as required.
  • Off-grid Emergency Mode (Utility Power Outage) Once utility power is cut off, the system rapidly switches to off-grid status. PV and batteries jointly deliver continuous power supply without instantaneous blackout, ensuring normal operation of key home loads and avoiding inconveniences brought by power failures.

The system switches modes automatically with no manual operation required. Users can check operating status via mobile phones.
